The Cabinet of Curiosities
By Don Krumpos & Erin LaBonte
The Dusty Attic, Kewaunee, WI
Antique shops are already cabinets of wonder. We just painted the door.
Case study
- Client
- The Dusty Attic — Heather and Dusty, Kewaunee, WI
- The problem
- An antique shop wanted its building to say what it already is inside: a place full of wonder and strange, collected things.
- The approach
- Yonder designed a trompe l'oeil cabinet of curiosities spanning the whole east wall, then handed the ground-level cubbies to the community to fill at a public paint day.
- Scope
- An exterior painted mural covering the full east wall of the shop.
- Participants
- At a community paint day, neighbors, kids, and collectors each painted a specimen cubby by hand.
- Timeline
- Painted and completed in the summer of 2026.
- Outcome
- A landmark wall the town helped make, and a working front door for the shop's own sense of wonder.
The cabinet is open.
Our newest mural for The Dusty Attic in Kewaunee, Wisconsin, is a cabinet of curiosities spilling across the whole east wall. At its center, a hooded crow keeps the shop: quill in hand, a ledger scroll cascading over the counter, a phonograph at his side. Around him, dozens of painted cubbies hold the kind of specimens you might actually find inside the store. Skulls and shells, tinctures and tarot, moths pinned under glass.

Here is the part we love most. The cubbies you can reach from the ground were painted by Kewaunee itself. At a community paint day, neighbors, kids, and collectors each filled a specimen box with their own hands. The wall belongs to the town that made it.

Painted with Erin LaBonte, and with Sam Severin painting alongside us. Thank you to Heather and Dusty of The Dusty Attic for trusting us with the dark, strange version instead of the safe one.
It is in Kewaunee if you want to see it in person. Worth a visit.
