Algoma Fish Mural Restoration

By Don Krumpos & Erin LaBonte

100 Steele St, Algoma, WI 54201

Yonder gave this Walldog welcome sign its first fresh coat in September 2021 — the second of Algoma’s ten 2007 Walldog Wave murals to be restored, following the Hennemann’s Cream City House wall in 2020. The money came the most Algoma way possible: an unofficial “Friends of” effort spearheaded by outdoor guide, photographer, and journalist Kevin Naze, who drummed up the funding from the fishermen themselves along with local businesses and individuals. Ahnapee Construction lent the scaffolding, Mike Lardinois helped set it up, and David Carpenter painted alongside us.

The original mural — Walldog artist Andy Goretski, the Chamber of Commerce sponsorship, and Algoma’s claim as the Sportfishing Capital of the Great Lakes — has its full history in the wall’s register entry.

Like this wall? Yonder paints murals across Wisconsin and beyond — homes, businesses, whole downtowns. Tell us about yours.
