Plate XII. No label. In its place, at the top, the glyph of Mercury — messenger, patron of archivists and translators.
A long-billed pilgrim in a traveling coat walks the bestiary on foot, a turtle leashed at his heel for a pace slow enough to see by. Four roundels hold the corners — small chthonic specimens, the ones that would not come when called. This is the plate that catalogues the catalogue: the figure who collects the twelve, caught mid-journey between them. If the key to this field book was ever written down, it was written into his coat, and he has never taken it off.
