A Trojan horse rolls on wooden wheels, a naked rider at its neck and a butcher raised behind — the offering and the knife delivered in one body. A pinecone drawn as an egg waits at one margin, a seed pretending to be a beginning; an anvil anchors the other. The plate is about what hides inside what is given. Whatever the horse carries, the field-naturalist filed it under gifts — and then, it seems, stopped taking notes.
