A plague-doctor puppet in a striped tunic swings a beak for a mace, menace played for the pit rather than the grave. A viola da gamba rests at one margin; a tightrope, drawn thread-thin, crosses another. Everything is theatre here — the plague a costume, the weapon a prop, the danger rehearsed. This is the Murk & Ember floor in seed, the chamber where dread is performed so it can be survived. The audience the stage-direction expects is us.
