Plate IX. The label has been struck through, twice, by the same hand that wrote it.
A goat-skull rides a body that is only a stake, one hand holding an ankh worked like a key, the other a banner with nothing on it. The elemental wheel turns at one margin; queen anne's lace — the wild carrot that hides its poison-cousin — crowds another. This is the scapegoat, the one sent out bearing what the others would not carry. It holds the key to the field book and is barred from the field book. The struck-through label may be its whole sentence.
