Plate III. Beneath the hull, in a child's Roman capitals: "MARE SUPERUM" — the upper sea.
A pig captains a longship through cloud and constellation, a raven at the prow reading the dark ahead. In a small tower a lookout leans to a telescope, watching for the shore of a sky that has none. The plate insists the air is a water and the stars a coastline; the naturalist has filed weather under seamanship. The margins are bare here — as if the apparatus, too, had gone to sea.
