Plate I. The label survives entire, in a hand steadier than the rest: "He sets out."
First in the sequence, and the only specimen that looks back at you. A cherub in a pith helmet rides a penny-farthing to the edge of the field book, a pollinator's lantern raised against a dark that was never drawn in. A stag beetle keeps pace at the wheel. He is the one who catalogued the other twelve — or the one the vanished naturalist sent ahead in his place. The lantern is not for seeing the specimens. It is for calling them out of the margin.
